Bubba Brothers: "The real balance reveals itself when you play it live"

Crowned Vicious Awards Winner in 2025, Bubba Brothers has earned widespread recognition through releases on renowned labels including Mossdeb Sounds, Spinnin' Records, Wh0 Plays Records and many others. With chart-topping releases, a growing global audience and performances at some of the industry's most iconic venues, the project continues to establish itself as one of Portugal's most compelling electronic music exports.

"From the Algarve to the world" feels more like a path than a slogan. What part of the Algarve still lives inside Bubba Brothers, even when the music travels far from home?

Hi, thank you for this opportunity. Well, actually, you're absolutely right. The Algarve will always be my soul and a source of inspiration, so wherever I go, it is always present.

Since March 2025, Bubba Brothers has entered a new chapter as a solo project. What has changed most in the way you make decisions, both in and out of the studio?

Everything is faster and more transparent in terms of the process. The tracks and lyrics were mine anyway, so there hasn't really been a major change. Of course, I miss my friend Justino, but the show must go on.

Your sound often sits between physical energy and melodic tension. How do you know when a track has found the right balance?

When I feel something, it's because the track has a story. If it has a story, it's ready to go. The real balance reveals itself when you play it live in front of an audience. They will tell you.

Winning at the Vicious Awards in 2025 marked an important moment. Beyond the award itself, what did that recognition tell you about the road you’ve taken so far?

That was definitely one of the milestones of the Bubba Brothers project. It was unexpected, although I believe it was well deserved. If people believe in, like, and buy your tracks, then you're moving in the right direction. This award confirmed, in a fantastic way, that while the road is hard and full of challenges, it is the right one.

Your music has reached strong positions across international dance charts. When a track starts traveling on its own, do you manage to keep some distance from it, or does it still surprise you every time?

I have to say it surprises me a lot. Sometimes I think a track is already part of the past and completely finished, and then suddenly it comes back to life. Every track has its own story and energy. Anything is possible, but nothing is a dogma.

Your releases have moved through labels with very different identities. What kind of relationship do you look for with a label before trusting it with part of your sound?

I have been blessed to work with labels such as Spinnin' Records, Toolroom, Alleanza, Golden Recordings, and many others. First of all, they need to like my sound and understand what I want to achieve musically. Once that connection is there, the rest is easy.

In your sets, there is not only selection but also atmosphere-building. What is the signal that tells you the crowd is ready to be taken somewhere else?

The crowd will tell you and lead you along the way. They will let you know whether you need to change direction or whether you're on the right path. Dancing is the main barometer of a set. When many people are dancing and not using their phones, that's the best sign. If not, you need to do something—and quickly.

Your music seems designed for both the body and the memory. How important is it for you to create tracks that stay with people after the night is over?

I think every artist aims to create music that stays in people's hearts and minds. So yes, for me, that is both very important and very challenging.

Between residencies, festivals, clubs and new destinations, which side of Bubba Brothers feels most urgent to explore now: the sound, the visual world, or the performance?

Performing has always been my main goal and what I love most. Making music is great, but nothing beats the heartbeat and the adrenaline of the tribe. That's the climax. So yes, performing will continue to be my main focus and priority.
