Elegie and the first techno performance ever recorded at Alcatraz

The San Francisco-based producer transforms one of America’s most notorious landmarks into the setting for the first-ever DJ set recorded inside Alcatraz, accompanied by the release of her new three-track EP on Dark City Music.
Some places belong to history. Others become symbols. And then there are spaces that, through art, take on an entirely new meaning.
That is exactly what Elegie has achieved with "Inner Escape from Alcatraz", an ambitious project that brings together music, memory, memory, and artistic vision within one of the world's most iconic and intriguing landmarks.
The French-born producer and DJ, who has spent most of her life in the United States and has steadily built a name for herself within the international melodic techno scene, has accomplished something unprecedented: recording a live DJ set inside the former federal prison of Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay. The performance marks the first time a music set of this kind has ever been filmed within the historic prison, transforming "The Rock" into a striking space suspended between past and present.
Broadcast exclusively through 1001Tracklists, the live set is far more than a performance. IIt serves as an audiovisual portrait of the island and its history, examining its contradictions and enduring symbolism. Walls that once represented confinement and isolation become the backdrop for a meditation on freedom, resilience, and the human desire to push beyond limitations.
"Alcatraz tells stories of confinement, but also of resilience, from the people imprisoned here to those who later reclaimed it as a symbol", says Elegie. That idea runs throughout the entire project and comes into focus in "Inner Escape from Alcatraz", released on Dark City Music alongside the launch of the live set.
The EP features three original productions that serve as the studio counterpart to the musical narrative presented during the performance. It is a body of work that highlights Elegie's ability to combine dancefloor energy with emotional depth and cinematic storytelling.
Each track approaches Alcatraz from a different perspective. "Jailer" focuses on the prisoner’s perspective, exploring what it feels like to be watched and controlled by someone else’s rules. "Ghosts of The Rock" reflects on the people who passed through its cells, imagining the traces they left behind as echoes still lingering within the island's walls. "Clint Westwood" is a playful nod to Clint Eastwood's classic film "Escape from Alcatraz", exploring the idea of escape itself—whether physical or deeply personal.
Musically, the EP moves between melodic and cinematic techno, built around a constant interplay of tension and release. The compositions mirror the contrast between the harshness of the prison's architecture and the sense of openness found when facing the water and endless sky surrounding the island. That duality lies at the emotional core of the project.
To accompany the release, "Inner Escape from Alcatraz" will also be available as a limited signed vinyl edition, giving collectors and fans a tangible piece of this unique chapter in Elegie's artistic career.
The release represents another significant step in the evolution of an artist whose path has never followed convention. Raised in France and shaped by experiences across the United States and beyond, Elegie has carved out a distinctive place within contemporary electronic music.
Holding a PhD in Data Science, with additional training in physics and a deep passion for synthesizers and hardware production, she brings a rare combination of technical precision and emotional intuition to her work.
In recent years, her releases have climbed the Beatport charts while earning support from influential platforms such as 1001Tracklists and recognition from publications including Mixmag NL, DJ Mag Spain, and DJ Mag Germany. Now based in San Francisco, she continues to build her reputation through performances centered around her own original productions, appearing at leading venues such as Audio, Halcyon, and landmark SF venues including SVN West and 620 Jones.
With "Inner Escape from Alcatraz", Elegie has done more than release a new EP or stage an exclusive performance. She has reimagined a place long associated with imprisonment as a space for imagination, introspection, and creative freedom—demonstrating how electronic music can preserve stories, reinterpret history, and create meaningful connections between places, people, and emotions.
