MWE Records heads to Barcelona for two-year anniversary featuring Death on the Balcony

Music With Emotion Records will mark its second anniversary on Tuesday 6th October with its first official label showcase at Macarena Club in Barcelona.
For the occasion, the Newcastle-based label welcomes Death on the Balcony, the acclaimed UK duo of Mark Caramelli and Paul Hargreaves. With more than two decades in the game, the pair have built a reputation as one of electronic music’s most respected and versatile acts, developing a distinctive sound that has taken them around the world.
Their catalogue includes releases and remixes for some of the scene’s most respected labels, including All Day I Dream, Anjunadeep, Saisons Musique, Satya Records, The Soundgarden, Kindisch and Do Not Sit On The Furniture.
Death on the Balcony have now formed a strong connection with Music With Emotion Records. Their "Verse (Power Within)" EP became a standout release in the label’s catalogue in 2025, making their appearance at the two-year celebration a fitting part of the story label journey!
Away from their relationship with MWE, the duo’s profile continues to grow internationally. In 2025 they appeared at Balance Croatia, sharing the festival line-up with artists including Sasha, John Digweed, Hernán Cattáneo and Nick Warren, alongside a host of other major names.
This showcase also brings together a number of artists closely connected to the label. BiGz, from Ready Mix Records, who has played an important role within the MWE family, with his deep, atmospheric and groove-led sound featuring across several releases.
Joining him is Kanedo, head of Personal Belongings and a key figure within the Barcelona scene. His recent collaboration "Found You" with Music With Emotion added another connection to the label, with the track subsequently receiving a remix from Death on the Balcony.
Completing the line-up is Music With Emotion Records label head Rory Cochrane, who will open proceedings and set the tone for the evening.
Two years on from its beginnings, Music With Emotion Records has continued to build a superb catalogue around deep, organic, melodic and progressive sounds including releases and remixes from other great artists such as Playa Moon, Aske Izan, Alex V, Zone+, DOT(BR), Mike Kohl, Erdi Irmak, Hunter. S, Alejandro Mosso, Bodaishin, Moe Turk, Juan Domecq, Savvas, Wawda & Mulo and Niko Garcia to name a few….with respected artists Hernan Cattanao, Tim Green and YokoO supporting in some of their sets of late……

MWE X DEATH ON THE BALCONY Q&A
Welcome gents and thanks for taking some time out to join us for a chat. We are more than excited to be celebrating two years of Music With Emotion Records at Macarena Club in Barcelona in a couple of weeks. Having played a big part in the label’s story, how does it feel to be joining us for this one?
Firstly, two years of MWE is an achievement and here’s to many more!! We have enjoyed our relationship with the label having released quite a few times with Rory. To this day however, we haven’t met, so beyond spending time in Barcelona & playing at the wonderful Macarena Club we will get to forge new connections & friendships which is what a big part of this industry is about. Sometimes these things can get lost behind emails and social media etc, but we must all remember that the roots of House Music were born out of freedom of expression, the dancefloor, mutual respect, music, love and community
How would you describe the Death on the Balcony sound today?
We still come back to the sayings we use publicly when asked this. It’s always a difficult one when you get in to genres as these are labels others give you and also in a constant state of flux, however we have a long-standing affinity with the many shades of House, Deep House and Deep Techno in our minds when it comes to our style and sound. We also like the saying "House Wears Many Hats"
Another one we always liked to refer to when these questions come around is something we have said for years regarding our sound. "Melodic Buzz of a hazy brain" - this feels like it encompasses a lot of the circles of our sound, deep, warm, emotive, trippy and groove led that we produce, play, enjoy and immerse ourselves in
We have delved in to other worlds and sounds recently as part of new different projects in the wider "DOTBverse" but it always comes back these styles & essence, and that thread still seems to connect & show its self with any of these pivots of musical genres!
What’s been your favourite place to play over the years?
We’ve had many a good experience in New York and travelling to the U.S over the years. Brooklyn Mirage & Knockdown Centre were particular highlights, every time we've played in South America, Buenos Aires & Mendoza last year too, both are amazing places! This side of the pond we have enjoyed Balance Festival in Croatia recently and also gigs in Portugal, Berlin, Ibiza, Amsterdam and we also really enjoyed the times we played in Montenegro & Tbilisi which were great places we had never visited before.
What inspires you most when you’re making music?
Inspiration for us can come from anywhere and everywhere. We always feel like the concepts for our music come from somewhere else. Half in your control and half beyond you! You have a window of opportunity to capture the moment and idea that arrives as these can be fleeting and you miss it. Sometimes it’s acknowledging this and listening, knowing intuitively. A type of channelling you might say. Achieving a flow state is a form of medicine and therapy to process and make positive all the events that are occurring in your life at any given point, from nothing & everything
Which Death on the Balcony production is your personal favourite, and why?
There simply isn’t an easy answer to this! They are all your offspring with their own character in their own way and have their own meanings & purpose in a specific time, space and place. Which makes them all unique. It is always difficult to rank your own art and usually best left to others to do so with and interpret how they wish
Is there an artist or producer you’d really love to collaborate with?
We hold all the pioneers of house, techno & disco in high regard and with much respect, who set the precedent, bar high with all the roots that were laid over four decades ago, onwards. So, far too many to choose one!
What are you most excited about for the next chapter of Death on the Balcony?
After 20 years of working as DOTB we are privileged to be still doing what we are doing. There are always new targets and aspirations which are very much ongoing. We are looking at starting our own imprints next year plus launching a new alias and pivot alongside Death on the Balcony & DOTB which will move in to some different realms musically, whilst still all being naturally connected. So, there is lots to be excited about & to be working towards
As we mentioned in the last question, we would also love to play and be involved at more events like MWE / Plastic Nights in BCN which are doing it for the right reasons and focusing on the community and quality of music. As much as there is a place for large scale events and spectacles, we believe a conscious move back to a more discerning and medium sized club format is part of what needs to happen in general, with more of a focus on the dancefloor, the sound, real connection, community and a environment that preserves creativity, integrity, expression and doesn’t just drive music to be faster, bigger, louder and driven by metrics and algorithms beyond just to fill cavernous spaces.
