Bartok - Mistral

Matt de Bathe - Aquae Sulis

Bartok’s "Mistral" arrives with an unusual sense of scale. The UK-based producer has paired his progressive house track with a music video four years in the making, building an entire fictional London inside the Unity game engine. What might have been a simple backdrop becomes a world with its own characters, places and visual logic.

The details make that world feel personal. The video opens in a recreation of Bartok’s real studio, while its protagonist carries his clothing and tattoos into digital form. Even the bat alter ego that appears at the beginning and end was groomed and animated by Bartok himself.

These choices give the video a strange intimacy: for all its technical ambition, it remains recognisably his. "Mistral" makes a case for the music video as a piece of authorship. Bartok’s background in game development shapes how the track is presented, from the cinematic setting to the character at its centre. The accompanying behind-the-scenes video, which places real references beside their digital versions, adds another reason to look closely at what he has made.
