Detroit techno legend Juan Atkins has died aged 64
A founding figure of the Belleville Three, Atkins leaves behind a legacy that helped transform underground electronic music into a global movement.

The electronic music world has lost one of its most influential pioneers. Juan Atkins, the American DJ and producer widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of Detroit techno, has died on November 1, 2026, at the age of 64.
The news was confirmed by his agency, Greensmith Artists. Atkins was in Mexico City, where he was scheduled to perform. The circumstances surrounding his death are still being clarified.
Born in Detroit in 1962, Atkins helped shape a musical revolution alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, forming the legendary trio known as the Belleville Three.
His career was defined by groundbreaking projects such as Cybotron and Model 500, as well as the creation of his influential record label, Metroplex, in 1985. Tracks like "Clear "and "No UFO"'s helped define the sound of techno and bring Detroit's underground scene to international attention.
His influence has spanned generations of DJs and producers, helping transform an underground movement into a global musical phenomenon.
With his passing, electronic music loses one of the visionaries who helped imagine its future. His sound, however, will continue to live on in clubs and dance floors around the world.
