Derrick Thompson, better known as Drivetrain, is a DJ, producer, and the founder of Soiree Records International and the techno imprint Xplor Music. A respected figure in Detroit's electronic music scene, he has built an international reputation through his commitment to underground house, techno, and forward-thinking electronic music while supporting artists from around the world.
His productions have been released by leading independent and international labels, earning global recognition across vinyl, digital, and streaming platforms. As a touring DJ, Drivetrain has performed at acclaimed clubs and festivals worldwide, captivating audiences with his energetic performances, flawless mixing, and exceptional track selection.
As Drivetrain, how central is the legacy of Detroit in your current understanding of "rhythm science"?
Detroit music and culture has inspired my creativity in a large way. The music legacy goes back many decades. Over time, Detroit has been at the forefront in shaping new concepts in music and the technology used to produce it. This has led to the inception of many styles of techno music as we know it today. This music revolution has been a major influence on the way that I create. The beauty is being at the center of the revolution and having the ingenuity to build my own artist portfolio.
Your compilation "Immortal" and the track "Feel Me" both carry a strong club impact but also a hypnotic, emotional depth—what was the creative concept behind this project?
We have compiled a selection of tracks with a deep undertone without sacrificing the dance floor energy. Each track is significantly different in its approach in achieving this. We’ve combined this spirit from 3 countries to produce a truly subversive collection.
You’re known for your energetic and highly precise DJ sets: how do you structure your sets when playing in such different venues and contexts around the world?
My DJ sets are always focused on giving people a musical awakening. I want to bring music that is unexpected, unknown and inspiring. My goal is to not only move people physically on the dance floor, but to also touch their soul.

How has your approach to production evolved in recent years, considering the constant shifts in underground music between house, techno, and experimental sounds?
As my workflow continues to revamp, experimenting with new gear and techniques, the essence of my music still comes from deep within. It will never be watered down or produced with a goal of pleasing someone else. I understand that in the end, pleasing myself is most important. Being a student of many styles of music keeps my creative juices flowing without limit.
What do you look for today in a track that makes you say "this is ready to be released", both for your own work and for the broader artistic vision you represent?
The track must have a clear element of originality. It should be of individual character, displaying the creator’s artistry. It should not come from another entity. Producers have their own style which is usually recognizable, but that should not limit them and every track should not sound the same. One of the most important considerations is the sound quality. It must be well produced and mastered.
