Founder of Soiree Records International, a Detroit-based electronic music label focused on underground house, techno, downtempo, and experimental sounds, Derrick Thompson has built a respected platform for innovative artists worldwide. The label serves both as an outlet for his own productions and a launchpad for global talent, with international distribution across vinyl, digital, and streaming formats. Through its sister imprint Xplor Music, Thompson has further expanded his presence in the global electronic scene, maintaining strong demand from both major and independent labels. Also known as Drivetrain, he is an internationally recognized DJ and performer, known for his energetic sets and precise track selection that have moved crowds at leading clubs and festivals worldwide, establishing him as a key figure in contemporary electronic music.

Your new tracks "The Clock" and "The Solution" on Soiree Records International have a very distinct identity—what was the main concept or inspiration behind these two releases?

Both tracks were produced during a time of dark inspiration. The tracks reflect a sense of minimal aggression, fueled with dance floor appeal.

As the founder of Soiree Records International, how do you balance your personal artistic vision with your role as a curator and mentor for other artists on the label?

Tracks that are selected for release on Soiree have a certain unidentifiable element that puts them in sync with the Soiree feel. There are times when I might sense that a slight modification could improve the track. And I have at times made suggestions to artists. But I would never try to force my opinion on someone’s artistic vision. The final product is always 100% the artist’s creation.

Your music is often described as "intelligent rhythm science". How does this approach manifest in the production process of tracks like "The Clock" and "The Solution"?

As the term "techno" implies, my music leverages the magic of technology to elevate my artistic creative abilities. With modern machines and technology the possibilities are endless. Knowing when and how to use the unlimited capabilities is art in itself and the learning process never stops. The tracks "The Clock" and "The Solution" have introduced subtle technical additions that are unique to my workflow, keeping me on point with my objective of pushing the boundaries.

With your experience spanning house, techno, and experimental sounds, how do you see the evolution of the global underground scene, and what role do you think Soiree Records International plays within it?

As technology continues to move forward, the global underground scene will follow. New genres will be created with the possibility of a total music revolution. With that, Soiree Records will always stay true to its roots. The sound and artistry will continue to expand, but the spirit will remain the same.

After years of producing and performing worldwide, what continues to drive you to innovate while staying connected to your roots in Detroit?

Music is in my DNA. I am driven by music and I’m also a very curious person with a need for granularity and detail. The music that I produce is the medicine for my sanity (argueably). Being a Detroiter keeps me inspired as there is infinite talent in the city, known and unknown. I support my city and the global movement it has created and as a Detroiter I relish some of the greatest musical influences imaginable.
