Matt de Bathe - Aquae Sulis
"Aquae Sulis" opens a new chapter for Matt de Bathe. After more than 800 live performances across the UK, Ibiza and Dubai, he brings his DJ and trumpet work together on his debut release. The track takes its name from the Roman name for Bath, a nod to his family heritage that gives the music a personal starting point.
His trumpet has a dark, warm tone that sits deep in the mix. Hard percussion drives the track forward, while the chord progression adds a slower pull underneath. The live playing gives the electronic production room to breathe, particularly when the trumpet holds a note against the rhythm.
There is plenty of force here, but "Aquae Sulis" works best in its quieter tension: the space between a trumpet phrase and the next strike of the drums, or the way a chord lingers after the beat moves on. It is a confident first release from a project shaped onstage, with enough feeling in the playing to make the title mean something.
