Ibiza to fine tourists €2,500 for breaking alcohol rules in San Antonio

As of 2025, Ibiza has tightened its alcohol purchase and consumption restrictions, with fines now reaching up to €3,100. These rules are part of a broader effort launched in 2020 to combat antisocial behavior and overtourism. Early measures included a ban on late-night alcohol sales in San Antonio shops and prohibitions on drinking in public streets.
The Balearic government has invested over €16 million in enforcement, inspections, and safety initiatives, significantly impacting key tourist hotspots like Palma, Magaluf, and San Antonio. While the restrictions do not apply to bars, restaurants, or clubs, they now cover party boats operating within a nautical mile of San Antonio, highlighting a comprehensive approach to curbing excessive behavior.
The goal of these regulations is to promote a more respectful and orderly holiday experience while encouraging tourists to adopt more responsible behavior. According to the Balearic Tourism Council, the hope is that one day such rules will no longer be necessary as visitor culture evolves.
Despite criticism, these measures represent a balancing act between maintaining Ibiza's allure and safeguarding the well-being of its local community. Whether they enhance the island’s reputation or alienate visitors will become evident in the coming years.
