Lumoon: "Music has always been my passion"

Belgian electronic music producer Lumoon started mixing at 15 and soon began performing in clubs. In 2013, while studying at university, he founded Clair de Lune Records with two friends, touring Europe with a sound inspired by disco, funk, and deep house. After graduating, he took a break from music to focus on his professional career but always stayed connected to his passion. Now, ten years later, he's back with SATO Records, a label blending breakbeat, club, indie-dance, and electronica, infused with a nostalgic touch inspired by the melodies of the '90s.

Can you tell us how the idea of founding SATO Records came about and what your main motivations were behind this choice after your musical hiatus?

Hello everyone, and thank you for this interview. I have been part of the music industry for over 15 years now, and like any journey, it has had its ups and downs. In 2013, together with two of my friends, Robin and David, we founded our first record label, Clair de Lune Records, where I was in charge of artistic direction. I absolutely loved this project, being able to manage the label, support artists, oversee releases, and organize events was truly fulfilling.

Later on, I shifted my focus to my professional career as an architect and stepped away from music for a while. However, I always felt like something was missing in my life. A little over a year ago, I decided to launch my own label, SATO Records, and I couldn’t be happier to be back in a role that allows me to shape the artistic direction of a label that means so much to me.

What artistic vision do you want to express through SATO Records? How do the musical genres it represents, such as breakbeat and indie-dance, reflect your musical personality?

As a true music enthusiast, the artistic vision of SATO Records has always been a topic of discussion, as the label has never been confined to a single genre. I have always prioritized musical favorites over strict genre definitions, with one key motivation: the emotion a track can evoke in its listener.

However, as we step into this new year, the artistic direction is becoming more refined. Emotion remains at the heart of the project, but we are now leaning more towards melodic house with a slightly detuned character, richer textures, and a strong sense of personality in the music we have recently signed. Time will tell how this evolves, but we have some exciting releases lined up.

How do you choose the artists and productions to include in the SATO Records catalog? Are there particular characteristics or emotions you look for in the tracks you decide to release?

The artist selection process happens in two distinct ways. The first is through demo submissions. I listen to them, and if a track resonates with me, I take the time to explore the artist’s musical universe and reach out to learn more.

It’s essential for me to keep the human aspect at the core of the project. It has always been about the connection with the artist, how they perceive the label’s energy, and whether the exchange is meaningful for both parties.

The second approach is more proactive. I discover artists whose music and artistic vision inspire me, and in that case, I take the initiative to reach out to them.

What are the future projects for SATO Records? Can fans expect new collaborations or special events in the coming months?

When it comes to SATO Records, I’m proud to say that we are actively working on expanding our presence in Central Europe. However, the biggest news is that we are now developing the label in Asia, with a new base in Bali, Indonesia.

We currently have three artists on the island, for whom we are actively shaping new musical and visual identities, myself included, by the way. Major projects are in the works for Bali and Asia, and you’ll definitely hear more about them in the coming weeks on the label’s page.
