unsui is an Italian electronic music producer based in Madrid, whose work is deeply inspired by nature and rhythm. His name, meaning "water cloud", reflects the metaphor of the water cycle: a journey of fluidity, transformation, and the exploration of new spaces, qualities that permeate his compositions. A former percussionist, he brings a strong rhythmic sensibility to his electronic tracks, blending hypnotic melodies with organic rhythms to create immersive atmospheres. Raised in Crema, he developed a deep connection with nature, which harmonizes with the vibrant energy of Madrid, resulting in a sound that merges organic and contemporary elements. Trained as an architect, unsui approaches music as a form of sonic architecture, carefully designing each element to create cohesive, engaging spaces, offering a profound emotional experience beyond mere entertainment.
Your latest single "A New Sky" on Be Your Own Studio Label explores new emotional and sonic layers. What was the main inspiration behind this track, and how do you feel your sound is evolving compared to previous works?
Each track I produce tries to find its own unique identity, connected to the inner process I’m going through at that specific moment. That’s why there’s always an eclectic side to my research. At the same time, I rely on certain synthesis techniques and key instruments like the Prophet-6 and the Moog Subsequent 37, always searching for a personal timbre.
With A New Sky, I aimed for a more energetic soundscape compared to my last previous releases. The suspended character of the main stab evolves into a sharper, continuous melody that represents a clear sky — the opportunity that comes after a storm. Rhythmically, the track contrasts a steady, heavy kick with a syncopated groove underneath, creating a sense of movement and release.
What drew you to collaborate with Be Your Own Studio Label, and how do you feel the label supports your artistic vision?
When Nau Leone invited me to be part of Be Vol.5, I didn’t hesitate for a second. I was already following both his personal work and the label, and I felt we shared the same intention of promoting high-quality, personal electronic music.
At the same time, I wanted to connect with a community that’s pushing this kind of sound here in Madrid, where the genre is still quite niche. Feeling part of a context helps you project yourself into the future, and I’m also convinced that this type of music has great potential in Spain. That’s why I’m really happy to be connected with the Be Your Own Studio crew.
Your music blends organic and synthetic elements, with a strong focus on rhythm and atmosphere. How does your background in percussion influence your creative process in electronic music?
Percussion was my first real approach to music. As a kid I played some guitar, but it was the world of drums and “skins” that truly pulled me in. There’s something almost ancestral about them — they connect us to something primordial. That’s why I like to work with strong, grounded percussion that contrasts with more ethereal and abstract atmospheres.
This coexistence brings us to the earth and the sky at the same time, opening up a potentially expansive listening experience. For me, this duality is one of the greatest forms of magic in electronic music — it makes you dream while keeping you grounded. It’s a spiritual dimension.
In your live sets, you combine analog synths, live sequencing, and immersive soundscapes. How do you balance improvisation and composition during your performances?
The live set is truly a living project — it’s in constant evolution. I’m always exploring new ways to adapt it to different contexts and situations. There’s a lot of preparation and programming work behind it in Ableton Live, where I run a stable session controlled through a MIDI controller with many effects mapped within the DAW. Then I usually bring one or two external synths and a drum machine to add layers and shape the energy depending on how I perceive the atmosphere of the moment.
This setup also allows me to introduce human imperfection into the live show. A live performance should stand apart from a DJ set through the experience of real-time creation, and I feel the audience connects with that sense of imperfection — it adds humanity and uniqueness to the moment.
In your previous works and in your upcoming (already released) project “Back Home”, there seems to be a narrative of inner journeys. How important is it for you to convey emotions or tell stories through your music?
It’s the most important thing for me. It took me — and still takes — a long time to find the tools and creative processes that allow my inner world to unfold and express itself in all its complexity. My projects are always the result of an inner narrative, even when they are released as singles.
Lately, a recurring theme in my work has been the need to return to my origins as a necessary step to keep evolving. Back Home is like a small journey to Ithaca, crossing through marine landscapes.
A New Sky speaks about going through the storm and embracing the new landscape once it’s over. A clear sky is never the same as a sky that has just cleared — the latter is much more interesting: there’s the smell of rain, the light breaking through, the air still fresh. It connects you with a sense of release, with the living tension of something that has just been overcome.
Right now, I think my music is searching for that place of liberation — somewhere between the storm and A New Sky.
